Glenn Miller was an American swing trombonist, arranger, composer, and bandleader, born on March 1, 1904, in Clarinda, Iowa. He started his orchestra in 1938 and became a best-selling recording artist from 1939 to 1943, leading one of the best-known and beloved swing bands. Early in his career, he worked as a sideman and wrote and/or arranged popular swing songs. In 1942, he disbanded his orchestra to leave for the Army, where, although too old to be drafted, he created a band. He was transferred to the Army Air Force and raised morale for hundreds of thousands of troops. Tragically, he disappeared on Christmas in 1944 while on a flight from England to France and was last seen on December 15, 1944. He was internationally mourned as a war hero.
