Gloria Ann Taylor (September 13, 1944 - December 8, 2017) was an American R&B and soul singer born in Dehue, West Virginia. She began her singing career in clubs during the early 1960s and was discovered by a promoter and production manager, who later became her husband and manager. Taylor's first records were released on the King Soul label in Detroit, but her biggest success came with "You Got to Pay the Price," which reached #9 on the Billboard R&B chart and #49 on the pop chart in late 1969. The song was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. After moving to California, Taylor recorded for Columbia Records before her husband established his own label, Selector Sound. However, by 1977, her career had stalled, and her marriage ended. Taylor returned to Toledo to raise her children and sang only in her church, not recording or performing professionally again. In 2015, after several years of negotiations, her recordings were reissued, and she expressed a desire to return to performing.
