Gloria Ann Taylor (born September 13, 1944, in Dehue, West Virginia - died December 8, 2017, in South Toledo, Ohio) was an American R&B and soul singer. She began her singing career in clubs during the early 1960s and was discovered by a promoter and production manager who later became her husband, Whisenhunt. Her first records, released under the name Gloria Taylor, were on the King Soul label in Detroit, but her major breakthrough came with the song "You Got to Pay the Price," released on Shelby Singleton's Silver Fox label. This track achieved significant success, reaching #9 on the Billboard R&B chart and #49 on the pop chart in late 1969, and it was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, which was awarded to Aretha Franklin that year. After moving to California, Taylor recorded for Columbia Records before Whisenhunt established his own label, Selector Sound. However, by 1977, her career had stalled, and her marriage ended. Taylor returned to Toledo to raise her children, working in other fields and only singing in her church without pursuing a professional music career. In 2015, following several years of negotiations, her recordings were reissued, and Taylor expressed her desire to return to performing.
