Gloria Coates was an American composer born on October 10, 1938, in Wausau, Wisconsin, USA. She passed away on August 19, 2023, in Munich, Germany. Coates studied under notable figures such as Alexander Tcherepnin, Otto Luening, and Jack Beeson. After her divorce in 1969, she moved to Munich, where she initially explored careers as a singer and painter before discovering her true passion for music composition. Throughout her life, she composed 17 symphonies and numerous works for small ensembles and voice, distinguished by her unique use of orchestral glissandos. Despite facing resistance from teachers and judges early in her career, Coates persevered and pushed the boundaries of music. Her symphonic work "Music on Open Strings," performed at the Warsaw Autumn Festival in 1978, garnered her recognition in Europe, though her music was seldom performed or recorded in the United States. Coates passed away from pancreatic cancer at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of innovative compositions and a significant impact on contemporary music.
