Gloria Jones is an American soul singer, songwriter, and producer born on October 19, 1945, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She began her career in a church gospel choir, which led to opportunities singing backing vocals for various artists. Her talent and experience in piano and composition earned her a writing job at the behest of Pam Sawyer. Jones is best known for her recording of "Tainted Love" in 1964, a song that became one of the most covered Northern Soul songs in history, most notably by another artist. Other notable singles she recorded include covers of "Come Go With Me," "Get it On (Part 1)," "To Know You Is To Love You," and a new version of "Tainted Love" recorded in 1976. Her songs have been performed by several artists. Throughout her career, she provided backing vocals for artists such as T-Rex, among others. In 1972, she met T-Rex frontman Marc Bolan, with whom she had a son. She played clavinet and sang backing vocals for T-Rex until late 1977 when a tragic accident occurred: she crashed her Austin Mini, resulting in Bolan's death and marking the end of T-Rex. Afterward, Jones moved back to Los Angeles with their son, Rolan Bolan, but currently resides in West Africa, where she is involved in charity work.
