Gnonnas Pedro (1943–2004) was a celebrated Beninese singer, songwriter, and bandleader whose dynamic fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms, highlife, soukous, and traditional Beninese styles made him a cornerstone of West African music. Singing in multiple languages—including Mina, Yoruba, French, and Spanish—he brought a cosmopolitan flair to his performances. As the lead vocalist of Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou and later of Africando, Pedro earned international acclaim for his soulful voice, infectious energy, and ability to bridge African and Latin genres with effortless charisma.
