Government Issue, often referred to as G.I., was a punk rock band from Washington, D.C., active from 1980 to 1989. Initially starting as a hardcore punk band, they gradually incorporated more melodic and alternative rock influences. The band's lineup saw several changes, with the vocalist being the only constant member throughout their existence. The original drummer played from 1980 until 1986, while a bassist who joined in 1981 later switched to guitar and remained until the breakup. Another guitarist was with the group from 1981 to 1982, and the final bassist joined in 1986, staying until the end. G.I. reunited briefly for shows in 2007 and 2010, but there were no plans for a full-time reformation. In 2014, they performed another reunion show featuring three-quarters of the Legless Bull lineup, playing songs from that EP as well as their 1980 demo. Following these shows, G.I. continued with a new lineup into 2015, celebrating the band's catalog and legacy. Tragically, the frontman passed away in May 2016 after a battle with stomach cancer, marking the end of an era for one of Washington, D.C.’s most influential punk bands.
