**Yegor Letov** was a prominent Russian musician and the founding member of the punk band Grazhdanskaya Oborona, formed in 1984 in Omsk. Known for his defiant stance against the Soviet regime, Letov's music was characterized by a raw, lo-fi punk sound and socially dissident lyrics. He began his musical journey in 1982 with the group Posev, but due to the band's aggressive anti-totalitarian themes, Letov faced persecution, including a commitment to a mental ward. After establishing Grazhdanskaya Oborona, he became the band's sole constant member, recording numerous albums often in his apartment, which became known as GrOb Studio. His prolific output included over 30 albums, with notable works such as *Nasty Youth*, *Necrophilia*, *This Is How the Steel Was Tempered*, and *War*. Letov's music blended distorted guitars, simple bass lines, and his passionate vocals, often incorporating elements of Russian folk and industrial sounds. Throughout the late 1980s, Letov also formed the band Veliki Oktyabrya and worked on a conceptual project called Kommunizm. His recordings circulated through the magnitizdat network, reflecting the underground music scene during a time of heavy censorship. Letov passed away on February 19, 2008, from heart respiratory standstill at the age of 43.
