Green Velvet, born on April 26, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois, is an American electronic DJ, producer, and artist. Initially created as an outlet for his non-vocal productions and frequent DJ gigs, Green Velvet became more popular than the man behind the name, thanks to club singles like "Preacher Man," "Answering Machine," and "The Stalker." Jones, who played a significant role in the Chicago house renaissance of the 1990s, achieved success in 1993 with the single "Brighter Days," featuring vocals from a collaborator. Later that year, he formed a sublabel primarily for instrumental tracks by himself and others. In addition to releases from various artists, Green Velvet was featured on many of the early Relief singles, including its first, "Preacher Man," as well as "Flash" (also released on a British label), "The Stalker," and "Answering Machine" (1997). He expanded his Green Velvet DJ schedule with quasi-live gigs and released his first album in 1999. His self-titled release the following year compiled a dozen of his earlier club hits, while his proper sophomore production album, "Whatever," was released in 2001 on his own Relief label.
