Grizzly Bear is a rock band based in Brooklyn, New York, known for their use of melody and ambience alongside hazy-eyed choruses, whistles, piano, banjo, and various woodwind instruments. The band originated as a solo project of the lead vocalist and guitarist, who recorded his debut album at home, initially intended for friends. This album was released in 2004 with the assistance of the drummer and vocalist. A re-release with a bonus disc of remixes followed in 2005. In the same year, two additional members joined, enhancing the band's sound complexity. This four-piece lineup allowed them to perform the intricate music from their first album live. They toured extensively throughout 2005, playing songs from their debut and new material that would form their first release as a quartet in 2006. A year later, they released an album featuring contributions from artists like Beirut, Atlas Sound, CSS, and Band of Horses. In 2009, the band released an elaborate album that included collaborations with contemporary classical composer Nico Muhly, Beach House's Victoria Legrand, the Acme String Quartet, and the Brooklyn Youth Choir. This album achieved significant success, debuting at number eight on the Billboard 200 and receiving critical acclaim. After a hiatus from touring, they returned in 2012 with their next album.
