Formed in 1969 under the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC was a collective of musicians redefining Cuba’s cultural soundscape. Led by composer Leo Brouwer, the ensemble fused traditional Cuban rhythms with elements of jazz, classical, and avant-garde music, crafting innovative soundtracks for Cuban cinema. Members such as Pablo Milanés and Silvio Rodríguez later became seminal figures in the Nueva Trova movement. The group’s pioneering work remains a cornerstone of Cuban musical experimentation and artistic expression.
