Grupo Um is recognized by critics as one of the most daring, dense, and radical sound experiments in Brazil. Formed in 1975 by pianist and composer and his brother, drummer and percussionist, the group emerged from the band and became a prominent representative of the vanguard associated with Teatro Lira Paulistana. They are known for blending the rhythmic richness of popular music with contemporary languages.
