Guv'ner is an angular pop-rock trio formed in 1993, stemming from the romance between singer/guitarist Charles Gansa and singer/bassist Pumpkin Wentzel. After relocating to New York City, Wentzel shared a demo tape of their unique pop sound with Julia Cafritz, a member of Pussy Galore/Free Kitten and a longtime friend. Cafritz then passed the tape to Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, who released Guv'ner's debut album, Hard for Measy for You, on his Ecstatic Peace label.
