Gwen Guthrie was an American singer-songwriter and pianist born on July 9, 1950, in Newark, New Jersey. She passed away on February 3, 1999. Throughout her career, she provided backing vocals for various artists and wrote songs that gained fame through other performers. Guthrie is best known for her 1986 anthem "Ain't Nothin' Goin' on But the Rent" and her 1986 cover of "(They Long to Be) Close to You."
