Hackensack was formed in 1969, although its origins are somewhat obscure. By 1971, founder Nicky Moore, who later replaced Bruce Dickinson in Samson, felt he had assembled the right band and began touring extensively. In 1972, Hackensack played over 250 concerts across Britain and Europe. That year, they released their first and only single, "Moving On / River Boat," produced by Muff Winwood, who was also working as A&R at Island Records. Hackensack supported label-mates Mott The Hoople on their Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus tour earlier that same year. In 1974, Polydor released their first and only album, "Up The Hardway." The LP featured a mix of heavy boogie and ballads, showcasing quality vocals and guitar. The band’s lineup included Nicky Moore on lead vocals, guitar, and electric piano; Ray Smith on lead guitar and vocals (who later changed his name to Ray Majors); Paul Martinez on bass; and Simon Fox on drums and percussion.
