Halfnelson was an American band formed in 1968 at UCLA in Los Angeles. In 1969, they recorded an untitled album, known as the demo album, intended to attract a record label, but it was never officially released. The band released their self-titled debut album in September 1971 on Bearsville Records, which was unsuccessful. Shortly after this release, they changed their name, and their album was re-released in 1972 under the new name, featuring simpler artwork that showcased the group against a red brick pattern.
