Hank Ballard and the Midnighters was a vocal quartet formed in 1952 in Detroit, MI, originally consisting of Henry Booth, Charles Sutton, Lawson Smith, and Sonny Woods. In late 1953, Hank Ballard replaced Lawson Smith as the lead singer. The group's name changed in 1954, and they released a series of singles between 1954 and 1958. By 1958-1959, they became known as Hank Ballard & The Midnighters. The group disbanded in 1965 but later reformed with Frank Stadford, Walter Miller, and Wesley Hargrove. After Lawson's departure, the band members included Henry Booth (lead and tenor), Charles Sutton (lead and tenor), Hank Ballard (baritone), and Sonny Woods (bass). In 1972, they charted with one R&B Billboard hit as Hank Ballard and the Midnight Lighters. The group was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame in 1990.
