Hans-Joachim Roedelius is a prolific German experimental and ambient electronic musician, born on October 26, 1934, in Berlin-Friedenau, Germany. He is based in Baden, Austria, and is best known as a co-founder of notable Krautrock groups and his work in an ambient jazz trio. Roedelius grew up in Berlin and was forced to join the army as a child, during which he acted in propaganda movies. After World War II, he was based in the GDR but deserted from army service, leading to imprisonment. In 1961, he fled to West Berlin, where he studied and held various jobs throughout the 1960s. By the late 1960s, he dedicated himself fully to music and learned to play multiple instruments. In 1968, Roedelius co-founded a music community and collaborated in establishing the underground music club "Zodiac Free Arts Lab." In 1969, he co-founded the experimental electronic music group with his friend. After one member left the group in 1970, they continued as a duo and later formed another project with another collaborator. In 1975, he began working on his solo debut, which was released in 1978.
