Happy End was a seminal Japanese folk rock band formed in autumn 1969 by founding members Hosono and Matsumoto after the disbanding of another group. They released their first of three studio albums in August 1970, with their second album, regarded as their "masterpiece," released in November 1971 and frequently topping critics' polls. The band was prolific as sidemen, contributing to numerous projects during their active years and achieving commercial success with solo and group ventures, particularly Matsumoto as a successful lyricist. The group officially split on New Year's Eve 1972, shortly after the release of Ohtaki's first solo album and before their third and final studio album was released in February 1973. Hosono's first solo album followed in June of that year. Happy End's first compilation album was issued in September, and the band reformed for a special live event with guest musicians that same month, resulting in a performance recorded and released as a live album the following January. A compilation featuring group and solo releases was issued in June 1974, and Suzuki's debut solo album was released in March 1975. The band had a one-off reunion at the June 1985 multi-artist "All Together Now" concert, leading to a four-song, 12" EP. Founding member Ohtaki passed away in December 2013. In August 2015, the surviving members performed at the "Kazemachi Legend" event
