Harold McKinney (July 4, 1928 - June 20, 2001) was a prominent jazz pianist from Detroit, Michigan, who played a significant role in the city's jazz scene during the 1940s. He collaborated with notable musicians such as John Coltrane and Wes Montgomery, and later worked with Marcus Belgrave, Wendel Harrison, and Phil Ranelin. McKinney was also dedicated to jazz education, contributing to the establishment of jazz programs at Oakland University and Wayne State University. He toured with his shows "Discovering Jazz" and "Jazz For a New Generation," reaching public school systems and festivals. He was involved in the Metro Arts Center and various city summer youth programs, and produced the weekly Detroit Jazz Heritage Performance Lab (DJHPL). His first album, 'Voices and Rhythms of the Creative Profile,' was released in 1974 by Detroit's independent Tribe label. Subsequent recordings included 'Root Classics' (1991), 'Discovering Jazz' (1993), 'Something For Pops' (1993), and 'McKinfolk: Live at the SereNgeti' (1996), all showcasing his original compositions and collaborations. Additionally, he contributed to 'Urban Griots: Michigan Jazz Masters,' released in 1998.
