Harold McKinney (July 04, 1928 - June 20, 2001) was a prominent jazz pianist from Detroit, Michigan, who played a significant role in the city's jazz scene during the 1940s, collaborating with notable musicians such as John Coltrane and Wes Montgomery. He also worked with Marcus Belgrave, Wendel Harrison, and Phil Ranelin. In addition to his performance career, McKinney was dedicated to jazz education, helping to establish jazz music programs at Oakland University and Wayne State University. He toured with his shows "Discovering Jazz" and "Jazz For a New Generation," reaching public school systems and festivals, and he contributed to the Metro Arts Center and various city summer youth programs. McKinney produced a weekly jazz workshop called the Detroit Jazz Heritage Performance Lab (DJHPL). His first album, 'Voices and Rhythms of the Creative Profile,' was released in 1974 by Detroit's cooperative independent Tribe label. He later released several recordings through McKinney Arts, Inc. and Rebirth, Inc., including 'Root Classics' in 1991, 'Discovering Jazz' in 1993, 'Something For Pops' in 1993, and 'McKinfolk: Live at the SereNgeti' in 1996. McKinney also contributed to the 'Urban Griots' Michigan Jazz Masters' recording released in 1998 by Dr. Moto Music for MJ
