In 1961, he formed a musical group and went on to write songs for various artists. Scales recorded singles for multiple labels and co-wrote "Disco Lady" in 1976, which became one of the first platinum singles in the U.S. Following this success, he was signed to a record label, where he recorded two solo albums in the late 1970s, produced by an unnamed producer. He returned to the studio for one more album in 1991 for another label.
