Hatfield and the North were a notable English progressive and experimental rock band from the Canterbury scene, active initially from 1972 to 1975. They briefly reunited in 1990 and again from 2005 to 2006. The band's sound blended progressive rock, experimental rock, jazz fusion, and psychedelic rock. Formed in November 1972, the original lineup included members who performed in front-room appearances. Pianist Steve left after six weeks and was replaced by organist Dave's cousin. Dave remained until January 1973, when he rejoined another member and was replaced by a new addition. The band's name was inspired by the first road sign on the M1 going north from London. Their first public appearance took place at the Lees Cliff Hall in Folkestone in November 1972, and they made their television debut in Paris in December 1972.
