Hawkshaw Hawkins, born on December 22, 1921, in Huntington, West Virginia, was an American country music singer known for his rich, smooth vocals and a musical style influenced by blues, boogie, and honky tonk. He gained popularity from the 1950s into the early 1960s and was recognized for his imposing stage presence at 6 feet 5 inches tall, often wearing tasteful Western suits that distinguished him from the more flamboyant styles of other male country artists. Hawkins was a member of the Grand Ole Opry and was married to fellow country star Jean Shepard. Tragically, he lost his life in a plane crash in Tennessee on March 5, 1963, alongside country stars Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas, and Randy Hughes. In 2009, he was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame.
