Hawkwind is a prolific and pioneering space-rock group from the UK, formed in 1969. They quickly gained recognition on the free festival circuit, performing live without a fee wherever possible. By the time of their 1971 album, they had become famous for their science fiction-themed music and theatrical concerts, which featured pulsing electronics, dazzling light shows, LSD consumption, and a nude dancer from 1971 to 1975. Despite a revolving door of members, founder Dave Brock has remained the sole mainstay and core of the band since its inception, guiding them from their psychedelic rock roots into explorations of heavy metal, new wave, ambient, and techno. Notable contributors have included Lemmy, who later achieved greater fame with Motörhead, Ginger Baker, and science fiction writer Michael Moorcock.
