Helen Humes was a renowned US jazz and blues singer, born on June 23, 1913, in Louisville, Kentucky. She began her recording career in 1927 and gained prominence when she replaced Billie Holiday as the lead vocalist with Count Basie's Orchestra in 1938. Humes enjoyed a successful solo career from the 1940s to the 1960s before stepping away from music for several years. She made a notable comeback in 1973 at the Newport Jazz Festival and remained musically active until her passing on September 9, 1981, in Santa Monica, California.
