Helen Merrill is a renowned US jazz vocalist, born on July 21, 1929, in New York City, New York. She is the daughter of Croatian immigrants Antoinette and Frank Milčetić, who hailed from the island of Krk in the Adriatic Sea. Her debut album, the self-titled "Helen Merrill," was released in 1955 and quickly gained success, linking her to the first generation of bebop jazz musicians. Throughout the 1950s and '60s, she recorded with notable artists such as Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown, and spent time performing in Europe and Japan, although she fell into obscurity in the United States during this period. In the 1980s and '90s, a contract with Verve Records and prominent performances in America helped her regain recognition. Known for her emotional and sensual vocal style, Merrill has maintained a vibrant career that spans six decades, continuing to perform and record. She was married twice, first from 1948 to 1956, and later from around 1992 until her husband's death in 2009.
