Helene Smith, known as Miami’s First Lady of Soul, was a prominent soul artist active during the 1960s and 1970s. Hailing from Miami, Florida, she released 45s on various labels including Blue Star, Lloyd, Deep City, Phil L.A. of Soul, Dash, and Dade. Notably, she was the first artist to record for Clarke-Pearsall Productions, Miami’s first independent black production company, and she was also the only artist on the Deep City label to release a full-length LP. At the age of 23, Helene married Johnny Pearsall, who owned a record store in Miami and worked in the music industry until his untimely death. Together, they had one daughter who became a lawyer. After her husband's passing, Helene Smith continued his legacy by working with children and became a teacher in the Miami school district, where she taught first graders.
