Herbie Nichols was an American jazz pianist and composer born on January 3, 1919, in New York. He passed away on April 12, 1963, in San Juan Hill, Manhattan, New York. Nichols made a living performing in traditional jazz groups, but in the 1950s, he recorded some of his own highly original compositions in a trio format. His music uniquely combined elements of bop and Caribbean music, featuring harmonies derived from various influences. Despite the originality of his work, his albums received only limited interest at the time. Many of his pieces have been recorded by other artists, including several that he was unable to record himself.
