Hi Tension was a pioneering Brit Funk group from north west London, originally formed as Hot Waxx in the early '70s. The band included notable members such as Phil Fearon and Lloyd Phillips, brother of Paul Phillips. They achieved major chart success with hit tracks like "British Hustle" and the funky "Hi Tension." The group's lineup featured brothers Paul Mclean on lead guitar and Patrick Mclean on saxophone, as well as brothers David Joseph on keyboards and lead vocals, and Ken Joseph on bass guitar. Other members included uncle and nephew duo Jeffrey Guishard on percussion and lead vocals, Leroy Williams on congas, Paul Phillips on rhythm guitar and vocals, David Reid on drums, and Courtney Pine on saxophone during tours. The band disbanded in the early '80s, with David Joseph pursuing a solo career. In 1984, Ken, Leroy, and Jeff reformed the group, collaborating with David Joseph and Paul Phillips on recording sessions. They released "Rat Race" in 1984 and "You Make Me Happy" in 1985, both of which achieved Top 40 success simultaneously. Paul Phillips also began his career as a record producer in 1981, working with AD 2000 and DC Allstars, and for the record label Streetsounds.
