Hildegard Knef, also known as Hildegarde Neff in the USA, was a renowned German actress and singer born on December 28, 1925, in Ulm, German Empire. She began her career as a cartoonist at the UFA studios in Potsdam in 1942. Knef gained prominence in 1946 with a leading role in Germany's first major film after World War II, "Die Mörder Sind Unter Uns" (The Murderers Are Among Us), where she portrayed a former Nazi concentration camp prisoner. The film became a worldwide hit, earning her several acting awards, including one from the Film Festival Locarno in 1948. Knef made headlines in German cinema by performing the first nude scene in "Die Sünderin" (The Sinner), which sparked significant controversy and criticism from the Roman Catholic Church. In 1951, she transitioned to Hollywood, working alongside prominent actors and solidifying her status as Germany's top export. Her remarkable talent was showcased in her 1962 role as Pirate Jenny in "Die Dreigroschenoper" (Three Penny Opera). After 12 years in Hollywood and Broadway, Knef returned to Germany, focusing on her careers as an actress, singer, and author. In 1968, she was awarded the title of best female German singer for her rendition of "Für Mich Soll's Rote Rosen Regnen," which later became a top 40 hit again in 1992
