Hildegard Von Bingen was a German abbess, mystic, composer, theologian, and healer during the medieval era. Born on September 16, 1098, she passed away on September 17, 1179. Hildegard experienced “divine” visions in her childhood and was consecrated by her parents to the Christian god. At the age of 8, she was introduced to the Benedictine abbey of Disibodenberg by Jutta of Sponheim. Following Jutta’s death in 1136, Hildegard was chosen as abbess. She expanded her abbey to Rupertsberg and Eibingen on the border of the Rhine and undertook many missions throughout Europe. During the Romanesque century, she held significant influence and was admired by Pope Eugene III and the German Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Hildegard documented her visions in her book, Scivias (English: Know the Ways). Her musical compositions were rediscovered in the 20th century.
