Hirut Bekele was an Ethiopian singer born on October 8, 1942, and passed away on May 12, 2023. She lost her father, Lieutenant Bekele Kinfe, at a young age and was raised by her mother, Mrs. Tenagnework Mekonnen, and her paternal grandmother. Hirut's passion for music emerged early in her life as she sang around the house, encouraged by friends to pursue it professionally. At the age of 16, she participated in a vocal competition with the Army Force Orchestra, where she was selected on the spot. Her first song, "Ye-Hare Shererit," released in 1958, became a hit. The Police Orchestra sought a talented female vocalist, and after a secret mission to kidnap her, she officially joined them, remaining with the orchestra for 35 years until her retirement in 1994. After stepping away from the entertainment industry, Hirut devoted her life to spiritual service, traveling throughout Ethiopia and abroad for over 28 years to share her faith in Jesus Christ. She resided in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and was a devoted Christian and member of the Addis Ababa Meserete Kristos Church, often performing with the church band.
