Hop Wilson, born on April 27, 1921, in Grapeland, Texas, and passed away on August 27, 1975, in Houston, was a notable figure in the Houston blues scene. Renowned for his slide guitar blues with an Elmore James influence, Wilson's signature sound was characterized by his use of an eight-string table (non-pedal) steel guitar. Although he played conventional electric guitar and was a powerful singer, it was his unique slide stylings that left a lasting impact, influencing artists like Johnny Winter and Jimmie Vaughan. Wilson began his musical journey as a child, learning to play guitar and harmonica. At 18, he acquired his first steel guitar and started performing at local juke joints and clubs in Houston. His career was briefly interrupted by his service in World War II, but after his discharge, he pursued music seriously, playing with Ivory Semien's group in the late 1950s. The duo recorded several tracks for Goldband Records in 1957. In 1960, Wilson began leading his own sessions after signing with the Ivory record label, recording there for two years until 1961. Following this period, he focused on performing in local clubs and bars in Houston, continuing to entertain audiences until his death in 1975.
