Horace Silver was an American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader, born on September 2, 1928, in Norwalk, Connecticut. He was a pioneer of the hard bop style of jazz in the 1950s. Silver received a significant break in 1950 while backing during a club date in Hartford, Connecticut, which led him to relocate to New York. He made his recording debut in 1952 and, in 1953, established a cooperative small group under joint leadership. Silver was under an exclusive contract with Blue Note from the late 1950s until the late 1970s, although some live recordings on other labels surfaced. In 1980, he founded his own label. Throughout the 1990s, he recorded for various labels but faced health problems. His final studio recording was in 1998, and he briefly returned to performing in 2004. In 2007, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Silver was the son of Gertrude Silver and a father of Portuguese descent from the Cape Verde Islands. He passed away on June 18, 2014, in New Rochelle, New York, at the age of 85.
