Horace Tapscott was an American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader, known for his contributions to the Los Angeles jazz scene. He was born on April 6, 1934, in Houston, Texas, and passed away on February 27, 1999. Tapscott was a key figure in the development of the avant-garde jazz movement in the 1960s and was known for his work with the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, a group he founded to promote African American culture through music. He was also an influential educator and mentor to many young musicians. His music often blended elements of jazz, blues, and African rhythms.
