Hot Tuna was founded in 1969 as a side project by an artist recovering from throat node surgery that had left her unable to perform. The initial lineup included a harmonica player, and for early performances, they were joined by a drummer. In the 1970s, Hot Tuna transitioned into a full-time band with a more rock-oriented style. For their second LP, a fiddler and drummer joined the group. Eventually, the band evolved into a power trio with a new drummer.
