Houston Barks was born in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. He initially got work for a one-night stand at a venue owned by Buck and Sunny Smith, where he impressed both the audience and the Smiths. As a result, he was hired to front the band at their establishment, leading to growing crowds that traveled from miles around to see him perform. Houston had written a couple of songs that Buck and Sunny deemed worthy of recording, resulting in a session on their Buck and Sunny record label. He recorded the songs "She's Gone" and "A Stranger." A review in Billboard noted that Houston's style resembled that of Johnny Cash, describing both sides of the record as 'weepers.' The 'A' side tells the story of a train that took his girl far away, while the 'B' side is about a stranger who took her away.
