Howard McGhee was an American jazz trumpeter born on March 6, 1918, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He passed away on July 17, 1987, in New York City. Renowned as one of the earliest bebop jazz trumpeters, McGhee was celebrated for his lightning-fast fingers and ability to hit very high notes. His influence extended to younger hard bop trumpeters, though this is not widely recognized. Raised in Detroit, he played in bands led by notable figures in the jazz scene during 1941, including a brief stint with several prominent musicians. He joined a band in California in 1945 and remained there until 1947. After taking breaks from the music scene in the 1950s, McGhee made a comeback in the following decade.
