Howard McGhee was an American jazz trumpeter born on March 6, 1918, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He passed away on July 17, 1987, in New York City, New York. Recognized as one of the earliest bebop jazz trumpeters, McGhee was celebrated for his lightning-fast fingers and ability to hit very high notes. He had a significant influence on younger hard bop trumpeters. Raised in Detroit, McGhee played in bands led by various notable musicians, including some briefly and successively in 1941, as well as for a short period with another prominent band. He worked with a group in California from 1945 until 1947. Although he stepped away from the jazz scene at times during the 1950s, he made a notable re-emergence in the following decade.
