Howard University Jazz Ensemble (HUJE), based in Washington, DC, was founded in 1975 by its director, Fred Irby, III. Recognized as one of the foremost college jazz ensembles, HUJE has delivered outstanding performances across the United States, Europe, South America, Asia, and the Caribbean. The ensemble has been featured on radio and television, and often performs alongside celebrated artists. Members of HUJE have received awards for their talents as performers and composers/arrangers, with several alumni becoming practicing jazz artists. The ensemble was also featured during the Kennedy Center Honors Gala in 1992, 1996, and 2005. Since its inception, HUJE has released thirty-four recordings in a distinguished series that began in 1976.
