Hoyt Johnson was a Country & Western singer and songwriter born on November 30, 1935, in Arley, Alabama. He was discovered and managed by a deejay, which led to a connection with Erwin Records, a Memphis label owned by Marshall Erwin Ellis. Johnson released his first record for the label in September 1957, a song he co-wrote with Atkins, originally titled "Where You Are," but released as "It's A Little More Like Heaven (Where You Are)." In late 1958, he signed with RCA, where his records were produced by an unnamed individual. In 1959, Johnson was invited to join the Grand Ole Opry, but his heavy drinking led to the Opry retracting their offer. Throughout the 1960s, he recorded country and gospel music for smaller labels such as Zone, Satellite, Allstate, and Gold Standard. Eventually, he returned to his native Arley, where he raised chickens on a farm. Hoyt Johnson passed away on August 9, 1989.
