Hu Vibrational is a collaborative music project that embodies the essence of Boonghee, a unique dance music genre characterized by a gathering of grooves and an absence of specific rhythm. This onomatopoeic sound resonates deeply, driven by the profound bass of pillow-padded mallet hits and the high-pitched slaps of the Udu clay drum from West Africa. Boonghee Music is a circular and organic phenomenon, blending minimal hip hop, Big Black hand drumming, and broken-beat influences, utilizing a diverse array of percussive instruments such as dusun’goni, sintir, thumb pianos, harmonium, batajon, talking drums, dumbeks, and flutes. The group consists of two accomplished drummer/percussionist/composers from Chicago, Adam Rudolph and Hamid Drake, who have been collaborating since they were 14 years old. Their musical journey began in a drum shop on the East Side of Chicago, where they later studied with elders from the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Over the past three decades, they have gained recognition in various music circles for their expressive styles and contributions to notable artists like Pharoah Sanders, Yusef Lateef, and Don Cherry. Rudolph and Drake have an extensive history of collaboration, with Rudolph having a catalog of independently produced albums and Drake engaging in numerous projects, including work with avant-garde bassist Fred Anderson and Bill Laswell.
