Hugh Mundell was a Jamaican reggae singer and songwriter whose distinct voice and deeply conscious lyrics made a lasting mark on roots reggae. Born in 1962 in Kingston, he began recording as a teenager under the guidance of producer Augustus Pablo. His debut album *Africa Must Be Free by 1983* (1978) is considered a landmark of spiritual and politically aware reggae. Known for his youthful wisdom and serene delivery, Mundell inspired a generation of artists before his life was tragically cut short in 1983.
