Hugh Hopper was a British progressive rock and jazz fusion musician, born on 29 April 1945 in Canterbury, Kent, England. He was primarily known for playing the bass guitar, but he also played the saxophone, guitar, and mellophone, in addition to being a composer and author. Hopper was a significant figure in the 'Canterbury scene' and originally joined The Soft Machine, replacing a member in 1969. He remained with the group until 1973, during what is considered the classic and most famous incarnation of the band. After leaving Soft Machine, he primarily played in the jazz and jazz rock genres with numerous bands, many of which incorporated the word 'Soft' in their names as a nod to his illustrious past. Hugh Hopper passed away from leukaemia on 7 June 2009 in Whitstable, Kent.
