Hugh Mundell was a Jamaican reggae artist born on June 14, 1962, in Kingston, Jamaica. He was a teenage prodigy, known for creating one of the great Roots records, "Africa Must Be Free By 1983," at the age of 16. Despite being produced by others, Mundell wrote all of his own songs, earning him the nickname "The Blessed Youth." Introduced to reggae music by a family friend, Mundell recorded his first session at the age of 13. By the time of his untimely death, he had produced five LPs and numerous singles, and he also ran his own label. In addition to his work as a singer, he made some deejay cuts and participated in sound system sessions. Tragically, Mundell's promising career was cut short when he was shot while traveling in a car. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, with various accounts suggesting it was related to an argument over a fridge, revenge for a burglary, or a dispute over a woman. Regardless of the reason, his death deprived the reggae world of a bright talent.
