Hypnobeat, founded in 1983, emerged from a DIY ethos and initially created music using a Boss DR-55 rhythm machine, second-hand gear, and household utensils. The project evolved into a fully electronic outfit after JDB's encounter with other musicians at the end of 1983. The group aimed for a "neo-tribal" approach, focusing on hypnotic rhythms while utilizing a variety of analog studio and live gear, including the iconic Roland TR-808 and TB-303, along with synchronized rhythm machines. This innovative sound contributed to the early development of contemporary club music, blending elements of classical Electro Funk and prototype Techno with a proto-Acid flavor. In 1996, Hypnobeat evolved into Narcotic Syntax, a band formed by JDB and another collaborator in 2003. Hypnobeat re-emerged from Narcotic Syntax with a solo live performance by JDB at the Serendip Festival in Paris in 2012. The project saw an exciting evolution in 2013 when another musician joined, leading to live performances based entirely on improvisation, featuring an impressive setup of a TR-707, three TR-808s, two TB-303s, and various effects.
