Ian O'Brien is a former UK music scholar who became deeply influenced by the Detroit techno sound, prompting him to start recording his own music. Initially, he produced tracks in collaboration with others under a moniker, later transitioning to a solo career that saw him release music on various UK techno imprints. His 1997 masterpiece is regarded as a landmark release by fans of the Tech-Jazz genre, which he helped pioneer. O'Brien released two more albums for UK Peacefrog Records and, in 2013, he launched two new albums, 'I Was There' and 'Understanding Is Everything,' on Japan's Ultravybe Records and his own label, Ian O'Brien Productions. 'Understanding Is Everything' notably shifts from his earlier work, focusing largely on live performances and improvisations, featuring O'Brien playing multiple instruments along with contributions from guest artists. He currently resides in Tokyo, Japan.
