Ifan Bondi, meaning “be yourself” in the Mandinka language, emerged from the former Gambian band Super Eagles, which was the leading group in The Gambia and Senegal since its founding in the 1960s. In 1968, they toured Ghana, significantly influencing the music scene with their distinctly African sound. After disbanding in 1970, Super Eagles reformed in 1973 as Ifang Bondi, introducing a new name and sound that incorporated indigenous Sene-Gambian rhythms, melodies, and instruments for the first time. They blended traditional instruments like the kora, balafon, sabar, talking drum, bugarabu, and djembe with modern instruments such as electric guitar, bass, and keyboards. This innovative fusion has led them to be recognized as the true originators of the contemporary “Afro-Manding” sound, which has inspired artists like Yousou N’dour, Salif Keïta, and Mory Kante. The current members of Ifan Bondi include Badou Jobe on bass (the only original member from Super Eagles), El Hadj Samb on vocals and percussion, and Jali Momodou Suso on kora and vocals.
