Ifang Bondi, meaning "be yourself" in the Mandinka language, emerged from the former Gambian band Super Eagles, which was founded in the 1960s and became the leading group in The Gambia and Senegal. In 1968, they toured Ghana, making a significant impact with their distinctly African sound during a time when the country was on the verge of producing the iconic band Osibisa. After disbanding in 1970, Super Eagles reformed in 1973 as Ifang Bondi, introducing a fresh name and sound that incorporated indigenous Sene-Gambian rhythms, melodies, and instruments for the first time. They blended traditional instruments such as the kora, balafon, sabar, talking drum, bugarabu, and djembe with modern instruments like the electric guitar, bass, and keyboards. This innovative fusion earned them recognition as the true originators of the contemporary "Afro-Manding" sound, influencing stars like Yousou N’dour, Salif Keïta, and Mory Kante. The members of Ifang Bondi include Badou Jobe on bass (the only original member from Super Eagles), El Hadj Samb on vocals and percussion, and Jali Momodou Suso on kora and vocals.
